La evolución del poder en Filipinas durante los siglos XVI-XVIII: la realidad de un imperio

Abstract

[spa] Durante más de dos siglos Filipinas constituyó un centro importante de transacciones comerciales entre Oriente y Occidente. Si bien podría considerarse un mundo exótico donde la supremacía hispánica llega para dominar el territorio, la realidad fue completamente diferente puesto que, aunque los colonos poseían tierras y contaban con indígenas a su servicio —hecho que implicaba un gran prestigio y valor social en Europa—, en Filipinas el poder residía realmente en quien poseía el poder económico. En la etapa de convivencia entre españoles y chinos en Manila, se podrá observar cómo el poder se va repartiendo entre ambos grupos mientras que los naturales de Filipinas quedaban relegados a un segundo plano dentro de sus propias tierras y cómo serán desplazados de los círculos de poder hasta bien pasado el siglo XVIII.

[eng] For more than two centuries the Philippines represented an important place of commercial transactions between West and East. Although it could be considered an exotic world, where the Hispanic supremacy got there in order to control the territory, the reality was fairly different, since the settlers owned the territory and received the services from indigenous communities —fact that involve a great reputation and social value in Europe—, in Philippines the real power rest on the economic authority. It can observe in the coexistence stage between Spanish and Chinese in Manila that the power was divided among both groups, while the indigenous from Philippines played a secondary role in their own territory and how they were moved out from the circles of power until the late part of the XVIII century.
