[eng] Gentrification was initially a term related to the transformation of most cities in the
world, in which the inhabitants of a neighborhood were displaced for the arrival of
new residents of upper-middle class and, therefore, of greater purchasing power.
This process was carried out with new real estate developments, such as the new
creation or improvement of infrastructure and housing and the increase in their
purchase or rental prices.
Since then, studies and academic papers on gentrification have been increasing,
giving way to new points of view and other evolutions of this event.
Nowadays this phenomenon is closely linked to tourism, since it occurs more
frequently in those cities with great tourist attractions. This is where the concept of
touristification is born, which refers to the commercial, social and urban
consequences that a community suffers due to the massive arrival of tourists and the
priority of covering their needs instead of the needs of the residents.
This paper analyzes these approaches and exemplifies them by focusing on the
case of the Balearic Islands
