[eng] Numerous studies affirm the existence of a negative relationship between the presence of depressive symptomatology and the practice of regular and constant sports, as well as the presence of a supportive social circle. It was also possible to establish a negative relationship between the presence of a specific type of motivation for sport, as in the case of intrinsic, integrated and identified motivation, and the rates of depression in people over 60 years of age. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether in people over 60 years of age living in Palma de Mallorca there were differences in the levels of depression depending on the sport modality and the motivational style. The GDS-30 questionnaire and the BREQ-3 were used to collect these data. The sample consisted of 51 people (27 women) living in Palma de Mallorca, aged between 60 and 83 years, divided into three groups: "individual sport", "group sport" and "no sport". The results did not show statistically significant differences between the scores obtained in the depression questionnaire between the three groups, nor were differences found in the levels of motivation between the sport groups. Statistically significant differences were found between the motivation levels of the "group sport" and "individual sport" groups, with the participants with an intrinsic, integrated and identified motivational style obtaining lower scores on the GDS-30. This study has been able to shed light on our motivational hypothesis, giving rise to possible future research focused on the development of programs to enhance integrated, intrinsic and identified motivation in both older and younger people in order to prevent depression or even combat it once the depressive disorder has made its debut.
