[eng] This project aims to demonstrate the use of the piano in Japanese RolePlaying Games (JRPG) music and to showcase the multiple connections
established between the piano and the JRPG music beyond the video game in
contexts such as: music concerts, official piano albums or the online work activity
of pianists on the internet. To do so, an initial theoretical review has been made in
order to study the evolution of the piano through the history of JRPG music, the
Piano Collections albums and sheet music books and the creation of the piano
soundtrack from I am Setsuna.
Furthermore, a more practical review has been conducted in order to look
into the role of the piano in the music from Kingdom Hearts, a popular ActionJRPG series with music composed by Yoko Shimomura. This research focused on
the musical analysis of the piano pieces from the Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom
Hearts II and Kingdom Hearts III soundtracks, paying special attention to the
function of the piano and the evolution of its sound over time. Additionally, the
Piano Collections Kingdom Hearts & Piano Collections Kingdom Hearts Field &
Battle sheet music books and the official orchestral concerts of Kingdom Hearts
music have been examined and reviewed.
Lastly, the importance of pianists who perform video game music as part
of their job on the internet has been highlighted. Through the use of
questionnaires, several professional pianists have been asked about their decision
to include video game music in their own repertoires, their approaches of studying
and performing those pieces and their opinions about the social recognition this
kind of music receives.
