dc.description.abstract This paper analyses relative clauses in English in which the relativiser functions as complement of a preposition in order to examine variation between pied - piping and preposition stranding. Ac ademic and journalistic writings are considered with the purpose of discerning if the new trend of colloquialisation of the language operates in British and American English. Drawing on data from the ICE corpora, this paper considers different factors to a ccount for preposition placement distribution , paying special attention to register. ca
