[eng] Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) is a 1-mm-sized nematode present in soil
throughout the world. The importance of this on research in nutrition and health
lies in the fact that it is an exceptional model for the evaluation of functional
ingredients with a potential beneficial effect on consumer health. Its rapid life
cycle, easy cultivation and handling in the laboratory, that its entire genome is sequenced, its great homologies with that of the human being and that it is
transparent, allow this to be a very useful model in the evaluation of functional
ingredients. Functional ingredients are nutrients or other bioactive compounds
that, apart from having their own nutritional properties, have the ability to exert a
beneficial effect on the individual who consumes them. Extract A, used in the
present work in C. elegans, is a digested botanical extract, which means that it
has been enzymatically treated in order to increase the bioavailability of its
bioactive compounds. The present work demonstrates a beneficial effect of
Extract A on skin health, since it protects (increases survival) C. elegans against
UV radiation, in addition to causing an increase in collagen synthesis in it. This
study allows the initial characterization of the extract for its orientation as a
functional ingredient for human dermatological health, anticipating a possible
beneficial effect in clinical trials oriented to this end.
