Evolución económica de la industria del calzado en Mallorca, finales del s.XIX – mediados del s.XX

[spa] A la hora de estudiar la evolución económica de las Islas Baleares se suele partir desde la base agrícola sobre la que se sustentaba la economía de las islas. Gracias a la tradición artesanal que existe en el archipiélago, poco a poco se fue integrando un proceso de industrialización, hasta llegar a tener un más que decente nivel de exportaciones. Dicha industria se verá totalmente eclipsada por la irrupción del turismo, que se adueñará por completo de la economía de las baleares desde su llegada hasta nuestros días y sin expectativas de que desaparezca. En este trabajo vamos a centrarnos en la parte que muchas veces queda olvidada de la historia económica de Mallorca, la industria de manufacturas. Que gozaba de gran reputación gracias a las habilidades artesanales de los habitantes isleños. Concretamente, haremos un pequeño estudio sobre la industria del calzado en Mallorca, repasando sus inicios en la ciudad de Palma y su expansión por la comarca del Raiguer, la importancia de la mano de obra femenina en este sector y las distintas fluctuaciones que sufren las exportaciones por culpa de varios conflictos bélicos que ocurren en aquella época. Todo esto nos ayudará a entender la importancia económica que tenía las manufacturas para la isla y sus habitantes. Pero que hoy en día, como muchos de los antiguos talleres o fábricas han quedado olvidadas.

[eng] When we study the economic evolution of the Balearic Islands, we usually start from the agricultural base on which the economy of the island was based. Thanks to the artisan tradition that exists in the archipelago, step by step an industrialization process was integrated, until reaching a more than decent level of exports. This industry will be totally overshadowed by the irruption of tourism, which will complete take over the economy of the Balearic Islands from its arrival to nowadays and with no expectations of it disappearing. In this report we are going to focus on the part that is often forgotten in the economic history of Mallorca, the manufacturing industry. Which enjoyed a great reputation thanks to the craft skills of the island inhabitants. Specifically, we will do a small study on the footwear industry in Mallorca, reviewing its beginnings in the city of Palma and its expansion through the Raiguer region, the importance of female labour in this sector and the different fluctuations suffered by exports because of various war conflicts that occur at that time.
