[eng] This paper analyses the evolution of the pay gap and the employment gap in
Spain. Firstly, it discusses the origin, historical context and evolution of the pay
gap up to the present day. Secondly, it analyses the factors that explain the
evolution of the pay gap and the employment gap. With regard to the
employment gap, we will talk about why men have a higher employment rate
than women despite the fact that women have a higher education, and what are
the causes and consequences of the wage gap. We will also make a
comparison of the employment rate and the wage gap between some of the
European Union countries and Spain. The most influential aspect of this work is
to demonstrate the impact of the decision to have a child, leading to the
precariousness and temporary nature of women, since by tradition or custom it
is the female sex who is responsible for the responsibilities of the home and the
raising of children. Finally, it should be noted that women work in the lowest paid
sectors, which means that in some circumstances women cannot depend on
their own income.
