Breaking the Stereotypes: An Analysis of Nick Nelson's Portrayal in Heartstopper (2022-) as a Positive Representation of Bisexual Male Characters in Mainstream Media

[eng] The lack of male bisexual representation in the media, along with the prevailing negative stereotypes attached to it (Steinman 2000), has contributed to the perpetuation of an unfavourable perception of this sexual orientation, delegitimizing it and making it invisible. Consequently, the focus of this paper lies in the examination of the positive portrayal of male bisexuality exhibited through the character of Nick Nelson (played by Kit Connor) in the British TV series Heartstopper (2022-). This objective is to explore how his depiction aims to challenge deeply ingrained societal stereotypes. Central to the analysis is the protagonist, a young bisexual man embarking on a journey of self-discovery within the confines of hegemonic masculinity (Connell 1995). Through an original exploration of the series, this study aims to refute the relationship between the concept of hegemonic masculinity and the construction of other masculinities. Additionally, it seeks to dismantle the detrimental tropes associated with conventional masculinity. To accomplish this, the research will illustrate how Nick’s character subverts the conventional clichés linked to both masculinity and bisexuality. Moreover, the dissertation will emphasize the importance of promoting positive depictions of bisexuality, not only to make bisexuals visible but also to provide young individuals, who are the target audience of the series, with a relatable figure like Nick, who can serve as a positive influence in shaping their own identities.
