[eng] Chatbots are computer programmes based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) that simulate human conversations. Among other things, they are able to solve doubts, formulate texts, or ask questions. Two years ago, a chatbot called ChatGPT was developed, which is changing the role of technology in education due to its effectiveness and immediacy. It is essential, though, to teach and learn how to properly use ChatGPT as a helpful tool for areas such as language learning in the education system. ChatGPT provides numerous opportunities that can be used in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom to practice writing structures, increase vocabulary, take self-tests, create text materials, or personalize these materials for each student.
This paper will explore the perceptions of both teachers and students towards using ChatGPT as a resource for Second Language Acquisition (SLA) in the classroom and the different motivations for its use. A survey for students, answered by 76 participants, and another one for teachers, responded by 22 participants, have been conducted to explore those questions. Findings showed that students and teachers, in general, consider ChatGPT a useful tool for English learning. According to the data analysed, the main motivations to use ChatGPT were that it is easy to use, it is quick, and it can create personalized materials useful both for teachers and students.
