[eng] The study of carbonate factories, their controlling factors and their paleocological and sedimentological signals recorded in the sedimentary successions are a key elements for the understanding the evolution of carbonate platforms. One of the researchers who dedicated most of his academic life to study carbonate rocks and carbonate factories is Luis Pomar. The idea for this special issue to celebrate Pomar’s career arose when we organized a session at the 34th IAS meeting held in Rome, entitled “Understanding carbonate factories through paleoecological and geochemical signals”. At the end of the session we presented our idea, and we encountered a great response, and other contributions followed our email invitation. This issue contains different papers on carbonate sedimentology and carbonate factories. Here, a brief introduction to the volume is provided that reviews aspects of Luis’s major achievements, a short review of the evolution of the carbonate factory concept followed by a discussion on palaecological signals and their application to characterize the carbonate factories and finally contextualizes the papers presented in this Thematic Issue.

Keywords: Luis Pomar, carbonate factory, carbonate platforms, product-process analysis, paleoecology
|
