dc.description.abstract [eng] This study explores various climate indices utilized in tourism, elucidating their calculation methods and practical applications. These indices serve as invaluable tools for aggregating pertinent climate data and assessing the impact of climate change on tourism well-being within destinations. The Tourism Climate Index (TCI) assesses the climate suitability for tourism in a destination considering factors like temperature, precipitation, humidity and wind. Similar to the TCI, Holiday Climate Index (HCI) evaluates the climatic conditions of a destination specifically in relation to holiday or vacation experiences. The Climate Index for Tourism (CIT) is another tool that evaluates the climate of a destination for tourism purposes. Moreover, the study furnishes comprehensive guidance for computing the Tourism Climate Index (TCI) for Palma de Mallorca, constituting a pivotal initial step in comprehending and managing climate influence on the region’s tourism sector. The discussion underscores the significance and advantages of TCI calculation in facing climate change challenges in tourism. It advocates for TCI adjustment to enhance precision and efficacy in addressing anticipated climate shifts. Furthermore, emphasis is placed on the use of TCI to identify potential areas for promoting sustainable and healthier tourism. Ultimately, the study recommends a governmental utilization of the TCI as a vital instrument for cleverly planning and managing tourism in Palma de Mallorca. The TCI can forecast service and infrastructure demands during peak tourism periods, and promote alternative tourism activities during climatically favorable months, manage urban cleanliness and waste, help adapting to extreme weather events, and assess climate change impacts on the tourism sector. Effectively harnessing the TCI empowers the government to elevate tourist experiences, foster sustainable and diversified tourism, and safeguard natural and cultural resources for future generations. ca
