The importance of tourism in the Spanish economy

Abstract

[eng] The main objective of this paper is to analyze the importance of the tourism sector in the Spanish economy from a macroeconomic point of view. More specifically, some of the main macroeconomic aggregates, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the Labor Market, will be analyzed. In order to understand the impact of the sector on both macroeconomic variables, we will analyze the volume of tourist arrivals, the most touristic regions of the country, the main countries of origin of tourism in Spain, the contribution of tourism to the total GDP, employment in the tourism sector and its contribution to the employment figures of the country. Addittionally in this study we will find the different areas in which the Coronavirus crisis affected tourism and the economy as a whole.

[spa] El presente trabajo tiene por objetivo principal analizar la importancia del sector turístico en la economía española desde un punto de vista macroeconómico. Más concretamente se analizarán algunos de los principales agregados macroeconómicos, el Producto Interior Bruto (PIB) y el Mercado Laboral. Para entender el impacto del sector en ambas variables magnitues macroeconómicas se analizarán el volumen de llegada de turistas, las regiones más turísticas del país, los principales países emisores de turismo en España, la contribución del turismo al PIB total, el empleo en el sector turístico y su aportación a las cifras de empleo del país. Además en este estudio encontraremos las distintas áreas en las que la crisis del Coronavirus afectó al turismo y a la economía en su conjunto.
