[cas] Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio fue un artista violento y excéntrico, protagonista de una vida atormentada pasada entre el lujo y la cultura de los palacios romanos de inicios del XVII y la pobreza de la calle. Ésta es la conocida leyenda de Caravaggio, creada por los biógrafos de su tiempo. Sin embargo, actualmente, gracias a la riqueza de descubrimientos y investigaciones acerca del pintor, se ha podido ir más allá, conocer al pintor, estudiar sus obras y trazar las lineas fundamentales de su biografía. Destacado por su forma de tratar lo sobrenatural, y en particular a la Virgen María, como si fuera realidad, fue criticado en abundancia por su excesivo realismo, pero también elogiado por algunos de los mejores conocedores de su época.

[ang] Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio was a violent and eccentric artist, protagonist of a tormented life spent between the luxury and the culture of the Roman palaces of the early 17th Century and the poverty of the street. This is Caravaggio’s well-known legend, created by the biographers of his time. However, nowadays, thanks to the wealtlh of discoveries and research about the painter, it has been possible to go further, to know the painter, to study his works and to draw the fundamental lines of his biography. Distinguished by his way of dealing the supernatural, and in particular the Virgin Mary, as if it were reality, he was highly criticized for his exessive realism, but also praised by some of the best connoisseurs of his time.
