“Manipulation, Spinal", "Complementary Therapies" y "Temporomandibular Joint Disorders”.

[eng] Objectives: To compare the effectiveness of the dry needling in the masseter muscle against the vertebral manipulation for the treatment of patients with a temporomandibular joint disorder.
Methods: A systematic review was performed in the PubMed, PEDro and Virtual Health
Library databases on April 2017. The following descriptors were used: “Manipulation, Spinal", "Complementary Therapies" and "Temporomandibular Joint Disorders”. Those papers that treated TMD patients with dry needling and/or spinal manipulation were included. The clinical outcomes studied were pain and range of motion in temporomandibular joint.
Results: We found 11 articles that met the selection criteria. Comparing the clinical outcomes, a greater improvement was observed in the studies that included dry needling as a treatment.
Conclusions: Studies comparing both techniques are necessary, but according to the data founded in this revision, dry needling offers better outcomes compared with spinal manipulation. Nevertheless, combining the two techniques offers better results than isolated techniques. |
