[eng] Oil is a raw material of major importance for the development of industrialized
countries. The price behavior in the fuel sector has been studied extensively by
the authorities and regulatory commissions.
Spain abandoned the monopoly in the fuel sector at the end of the 20th century.
Since then, this monopoly has been object of interest by economists and oil agents. In addition to Spain, the current situation and the composition of the fuel
price will be analyzed in France, Germany and United States.
Since the sector was liberalized at the end of the last century, there have been
manipulations, agreements and/or illegal contracts between oil companies that
have directly and/or indirectly affected the economic capacity of consumers.
The regulatory commissions have opened files in order to end this situation. At
the global level, since 1985, there is some research dealing with these
problems all over the world. This research names phenomena such as “Rockets
and Feathers,” which attempts to justify the asymmetry that occurs when the
price of crude oil increases and/or decreases, compared to the price that the
final consumer pays. There are also some researches of the “Monday effect”, in
which on every Monday of each week, the fuel prices decrease considerably to
later increase again during the week.
