Melville poden sonar, a dia d’avui, a noms estranys i sense importància pels joves
estudiants.
[eng] In this work, it is intended to present a series of literary readings within the subject
of English. These readings are designed for secondary and high school students
with clear purposes: to get more fluency in the English language (grammar,
vocabulary, orality, etc.), to work the key competences and let them to find out
the passion for literature and critical thinking awakening.
In a changing society where information and digital management are becoming
increasingly frequent in everyday life, we discover that literature can be very
unnoticed by the young people. Today, important authors such as Shakespeare,
Dickens and Melville may sound slightly bizarre and unimportant for young
students. It cannot be denied that English literature is very rich and numerous, as
well as transcendental within art and letters. Learning a language does not only
fall into the teaching of grammar, syntax, lexicon or pronunciation, but also the
culture and traditions, that are almost always closely related to the language,
should also be valued. Authors like the ones I have been called before, are a few
of those who have contributed more to the evolution and normalization of what
we understand as the English language right now. It is well known that Shakespeare or Dickens were great creators of neologisms during their time,
therefore, they owe a large number of expressions and words that now form part
of the normality of this language. Consequently, the reading and knowledge of
the learned language culture should be taken in the hands of the other learning
disciplines, since reading can reinforce and cohesion this learning.
This paper will cite and give very specific guidelines for colleges and institutes,
through the figure of the English language teacher, to have a guide to know which
novels or short-stories in English literature can be motivating for each course of
secondary and advanced level, always taking into account the needs and
concerns of students.
