[eng] Glucose intolerance and insulin resistance may represent early signs of metabolic abnormality,
which precede the manifestation of type 2 diabetes. Various plant extracts have been shown to
improve glycemic control and lower the risk of type 2 diabetes disease due to their content in
bioactive compounds. Thus, the main objective of the work is to describe the activities carried
out during the internship regarding a double-blind placebo controlled intervention study with a
plant extract (400 mg or 600 mg / day for 12 months), focused on the control of blood glucose
in insulin resistant volunteers that is under development by the company. As well as presenting
parameters from a group of volunteers, gathered at the zero phase of the study.
The study population was approximately 15 insulin resistant volunteers aged between 40 and
80 years. At the beginning of the study, nutritional assessment, anthropometric assessment and
biochemical analysis were performed. The results were analyzed and processed with the
statistical program SPSS with a level of significance p <0.05. A direct correlation between
BMI and waist circumference was found, and the link of insulin resistance with the
accumulation of visceral fat was confirmed, as 80% of the studied participants were overweight
or obese and 93,3 % had greater than normal waist to hip ratio. Finding non-pharmacological
alternatives, such as Phyto extracts, capable of preventing type 2 diabetes pathology is of great
interest.
