[eng] INTRODUCTION
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease, autoimmune in nature,
characterized by symmetric involvement of multiple joints and the presentation of
various general non-specific symptoms and extra-articular manifestations. It affects
between 0.3-1.0 % of the world population and about 0.5% of the adult Spanish
population. It causes great limitations in daily life activities of the people who suffer
from it and, therefore, diminishing their living standards. Mediterranean diet, which is
rich in fruit, vegetables, fish and low in saturated fats, produces many benefits for
people's health and it helps to improve the symptoms of many pathologies, including
rheumatoid arthritis among others.
OBJETIVES
Find out what knowledge of rheumatoid arthritis patients from a Mediterranean zone
have about their own disease, especially with regards to food and investigate if
Mediterranean diet produces beneficial therapeutic effects and analyze its evidence in
these patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
A parallel, multicenter and randomized clinical trial will be conducted, comparing a
control group that will continue with its usual diet and an intervention group, which will
be given information and will follow a diet based on the Mediterranean model for a year.
The population to be studied will be patients with rheumatoid arthritis in the city of
Murcia who are between 40 and 70 years old that meet the inclusion criteria and will
obtain a representative sample composed of 240 patients, distributed in any of the two
previously mentioned groups. The variables that will be studied will be: Activity of the
disease through the DAS-28 Scale, Health of the participants with the HAQ
questionnaire, Quality of life with the SF-36 questionnaire, Pain with the EVA scale,
Several analytical parameters related to arthritis: C-reactive protein, rheumatoid factor,
sedimentation rate, and tumor necrosis factor, and an evaluation of feeding with a CFCA
questionnaire and the participants' knowledge about their disease and feeding more
suitable for her.
WORKPLAN
Participants will be tracked for a period of one year. In the control group 4 visits will be
made (basal, 3, 6 and 12 months) and in the intervention group one will be added after
5 months. In the first one, baseline data of both groups will be obtained and the
necessary information will be given and the other visits will be followed up on the
variables.
