[eng] Background: Pain assessment in the pediatric area is complicated by the cognitive immaturity of this group of patients. There are several pain scales, on the one hand, self-administered and on the other hand hetero-administered, which objective this vital sign so subjective. That’s why we aim to identify the most appropriate scale or scales for this assessment.
• Methods and Results: A literature review is made in the PubMed database, reviewing a total of 26 articles that are suited to the topic to be discussed. Discussion: Self-administered scales should be the first choice, although there is no agreement on the minimum age, differing between 4 and 8 years. Within this group many are the scales used. The advantages and limitations of the most studied scales in the included literature have been highlighted. When it is not possible to use them, the hetero-administered scales, which are the behavioral pain scales, will be used. Within this group there are more than 40 of which have been explained the most used and with more accurate psychometric properties.
• Conclusions: Despite the Gold Standard are the self-administered scales, there is no consensus about the age from which they should begin to be used. More research is needed on the type of scales suitable for the earliest ages.
