[eng] Background: Patient safety has begun to be considered a primary issue in health
practice. It is considered an essential component of the Quality Assurance. The
consequences of the lack of safety are the so-called adverse events (AE) derived mainly
from malpractice by health personnel. Most of these AE are avoidable and in the case of
not detecting them, they can cause serious damage. The most frequent AE are those
related to medication errors (EM), especially related to the administration of
medications. For this reason, it is essential to detect the factors that cause such EM in
the different phases and the strategies that exist to prevent and avoid them. Objective:
To know the measures that nurses apply when they administer medication in emergency situations in adults. Methodology: Review of the literature in the databases: Pubmed,
Cuiden, LILACS and Ovid; and in the EBSCOhost metasearch (Academic search
premier and CINAHL). Several articles were also reached using the snowball method.
Results: After having carried out the bibliographic search and after applying the
inclusion and exclusion criteria, 21 articles of interest were obtained. Conclusions: To
reduce the EM in the ED, several factors associated with them must be reduced, and at
the same time, improvement strategies must be applied to ensure patient safety. The
strategy of the "5 correct" assures us the reduction of the EM in its majority since it acts
on the most common errors, that is to say, via, dose, hour, medication and incorrect
patient.
