[eng] To quantify and understand the causes of population differentiation in plants is essential to
evaluate the taxonomic structure of the species. Using linear and geometric morphometric
approaches, phenotypic variation and associations between leaf traits were investigated in
Smilax aspera L. var. aspera and the endemic Balearic Smilax aspera L. var. balearica Willk,
which are two varieties that are subordinate to the species Smilax aspera L., which has a great
variability in the shape and size of the leaves. Other differential features were also analysed
between the two varieties, such as the thickness of the stem and the abundance of thorns. The
morphometric results show that both taxa present different patterns of variation in the shape
of the leaves. Therefore, it can be concluded that foliar morphology, which is evidenced by
the use of morphometric geometry methods, could be a crucial characteristic for the effective
taxonomic distinction of the species
