[eng] The role of women in art started to be questioned as a result of the feminist movements that originated in the sixties in the USA and Europe. Specifically within feminist film theory, many studies have deliberated this subject in order to understand the roles that have been assigned to women throughout the history of cinema. Above all, films belonging to the American film noir genre –in which women typically appear objectified– have been considered in these studies.
This paper focuses on the Italian neorealism movement given that it appeared at the same time as the American film noir genre; although it is a very different artistic product and so are its characters. This paper also studies the role of women in this genre, analysing the characters and classifying them by archetype.
