Measuring women’s empowerment: evidence from Nigeria

Abstract

[eng] Over the years, the presence of a system of government rooted and sustained in patriarchy has shown evidence that even though women perform big duties in their families and the society globally, they are still discriminated and oppressed when it comes to important roles and opportunities in the society. The problems women face include financial, economic,educational, social, political, etc. and are often never addressed despite the roles women play in productive activities, and in the nation’s development. The need to empower women, therefore, is not only crucial to increase competitiveness in the global economy, but compulsory for the development of any society. This paper seeks to examine the empowerment status of Nigerian women using selected indicators. An overview of different factors and their characteristics on the level of empowerment was carried out. Also, the steps that can be implemented to enable that this policy continues to remain relevant in the society until satisfying results are attained were looked into. It is recommended that the right laws combined with the right implementation should be taken into account to empower women and maximize their full potential and enable them to partake in roles that would benefit the human progress.

[spa] A lo largo de los años, la presencia de un sistema de gobierno arraigado y sostenido en el patriarcado ha mostrado evidencia de que, aunque las mujeres desempeñan grandes deberes en sus familias y en la sociedad a nivel mundial, siguen siendo discriminadas y oprimidas cuando se trata de roles y oportunidades importantes en la sociedad. Los problemas que enfrentan las mujeres incluyen los financieros, económicos, sociales, políticos, etc. y, a menudo, nunca se abordan a pesar del papel que desempeñan las mujeres en las actividades productivas y en el desarrollo de la nación. La necesidad de empoderar a las mujeres, por lo tanto, no solo es crucial para aumentar la competitividad en la economía global, pero también es obligatoria para el desarrollo de cualquier sociedad. Este trabajo busca analizar fundamentalmente la presencia del empoderamiento de la mujer en Nigeria. Se realizó un repaso de diferentes factores y sus características a nivel de empoderamiento. Asimismo, se analizaron los pasos que se pueden implementar para que esta política continúe siendo relevante en la sociedad hasta que se logren resultados satisfactorios. Se recomienda que se tomen en cuenta las leyes correctas combinadas con la implementación correcta para empoderar a las mujeres y maximizar su potencial pleno y permitirles participar en roles que beneficiarían el progreso humano.
