Abstract:
Description:
[eng] The growth of adoptions in Spain has led to an increase in interest in studying this phenomenon
and in knowing the consequences that the adaptation of this process entails for the child and the
family. As a result, the experts have investigated all the aspects involved in the adoption
process, going through 3 trends. The present work is framed within the last one, since it seeks to clarify the psychosocial consequences originated by the development of the adoption process
in adopted minors. Likewise, the consequences that this process may have had on the adopting
parents are also included, since several investigations postponed the fact of analyzing the
influence of the parents on the development of the child and the family adaptation of the latter.
In this way, the present bibliographical review has the purpose of analyzing and comparing the
psychosocial consequences that the adoption process entails for the adopted children and the
adopting parents.
A total of 326 articles were obtained for the drafting of this document, of which only 23 articles,
in addition to a doctoral thesis and a manual, were reviewed and incorporated into the work. It
is worth mentioning that most of the literature has a qualitative and quantitative methodology,
which incorporates interviews with adopted youth and adoptive parents, the use of
questionnaires to assess various aspects and situations, and case studies.
In addition, the literature shows that it is in adoption where children manifest various problems,
which affect various areas (e.g., cognitive development, emotional area, health habits, school
performance, among other aspects). However, after some time and after an adequate adaptation,
most of the conflicts disappear or tend to appear in a lesser degree, causing an improvement in
the child's development. As for the psychosocial consequences of the adopting parents, these
are associated with the adaptation and perception of the new member entering the family unit.
