[eng] Cardiovascular problems such as acute myocardial heart attacks, strokes, amongst others, are
one of todays health problems with the greatest impact on society, causing deaths or invalidity,
which affect the quality of life, and the health of the people and the economy . A total of
120,859 people died as a consequence of a cardiovascular illness in Spain in 2018, according to
4
the latest report issued by the National Institute of Statistics (INS). This year, the standardized
average rate of cardiovascular mortality reached 230.5 deaths for each 100,000 inhabitants .
Scientific evidence exists stating that the majority of chronic illnesses, including cardiovascular
illnesses, can be prevented by hygienic and dietary measures, hence the recommendations of
numerous scientific bodies and official organisations in this sense .
Functional food is shown in our pyramid of food as an intermediate range between foods and
medicines. Specifically one : Omega 3, prescribed by doctors to people with cardiovascular
risks of suffering acute myocardial heart attacks (IAM) due to high levels of cholesterol in their
blood. Scientific revisions from different sources, such as Pubmed, Cochrane, data bases are not
conclusive. There are studies that affirm that supplementing a diet with Omega 3 diminishes the
cardiac risk by reducing the cholesterol in the blood, other studies affirm that, this is a myth
because in the long term mortality is not reduced and there is no scientific base that supports
this .
This study tries to evaluate whether the cardiovascular risk : of acute myocardial heart attacks
(IAM) or cerebrovascular strokes, gets reduced if we add Omega 3 to the diet of a person with
hypercholesterolemia. Through a controlled clinical trial, people with hypercholesterolemia will
be given an educational lecture and others will be given functional food (Omega 3). The levels
of cholesterol in the blood will be measured and the “Core” scale will be used to evaluate the
cardiovascular risks and the effects of the mentioned lecture. If these prove satisfactory, it
would be possible to recommend the consumption of the said foods.
