[eng] The horse mackerel Trachurus mediterraneus is an important fishery resource in the
Mediterranean Sea, but biological data on the species are very limited in the Spanish
region. To achieve an adequate management of species of economic importance and a
sustainable exploitation, it is essential to monitor and determine their biological
characteristics. Therefore, the values of abundance, distribution and main population
biological parameters of the horse mackerel were estimated in two management units
(GSA) designated by the General Mediterranean Fisheries Commission in the Spanish
Mediterranean Sea (GSA06-North of Spain and 01-North of the Alboran Sea). The
abundance, spatial and length frequency distributions (LFD) were estimated using
acoustic surveys. The length-weight relationship, the condition factor (FC), the sex ratio
and the size at first maturity (L50) were calculated from 4339 individuals collected
during the 2016-2020 Mediterranean International Acoustic campaign. The abundance
and biomass values showed annual fluctuations possibly influenced by the exploitation
of the stocks and environmental variability. Two areas, specifically on the coasts of
Malaga and Barcelona, were found as possible recruitment areas given the greater
presence of juveniles evidenced. The spatial distribution of T. mediterraneus was mainly
concentrated in the first 60 m in GSA01 and up to 105 m in GSA06. The LFDs showed
differences in size, suggesting that the horse mackerel was larger in GSA01, possibly
favored by greater food availability. Furthermore, T. mediterraneus showed negative
allometric growth, with some isometric type oscillations in GSA06. In GSA01,
specimens were perceived with a better FC, as well as a better state of males compared
to females, who invest their energy in spawning. On the other hand, males predominated
over females, due to physiological factors during reproduction. The L50 exhibited
significant differences between zones, suggesting a length for future management (based
on the size at first maturity estimated in this study) of 16.40 cm in GSA01 and 15.82 cm
in GS06. |
