[eng] This paper deals with the segmentation of work by gender in the rural world of Menorca
during the second half of the 20th century, using a specific example. More specifically, in
the framework of one of the characteristic exploitation units of the island: the so-called
"llocs". The research is based on a series of interviews with the sharecroppers who were
in charge of the Llinàritx Nou estate since 1936. Documents of different characteristics
(contracts, accounts, photographs, etc.) generated by these sharecroppers in the course of
their activity are also presented. The research shows, as was the case in practically all
areas in pre-industrial times, that the sharecropper's wife, despite working daily in the
daily tasks of the farm and looking after the general welfare of the family unit, did not
appear in the sharecropping contracts that were periodically renewed. Likewise, as in the
case of the "housewives", her incorporation into the general social security system and the
payment of this right by the owner was much later than that of her husband.
