Maó i Ciutadella.
I, en tercer
S'aborda, a
[eng] The results are presented on the segmentation of the labour market by gender in two cities
on the island of Menorca based on the systematisation of the population registers of 1924:
Maó and Ciutadella. The interest of the work transcends, however, the strictly local
sphere. It is part of a general project that seeks to establish parallels with other Spanish
cities and in which the Department of Economic History and Institutions of the UIB's
Department of Applied Economics is participating. The choice of Menorca as a
geographical framework is based, firstly, on the intersectoral balance that the island
presents (in comparison with Mallorca and Eivissa) with respect to the number of people
dedicated to the different economic sectors. Secondly, the island's specialisation in the
footwear subsector. And thirdly, in the marked maritime character of both localities,
especially in the case of Maó. Partly because of the commercial importance of its port and
partly because of the large military population it housed. The composition of the labour
markets in both cities is analysed and, at the same time, comparisons are made in terms of
the professions more or less. However, this particular paper focuses on the analysis of one
particular occupational group: the shoe workers who were engaged in the fitting phase and
who consequently deserve the name of dressers. After a general introduction, a first
section is devoted to the analysis of the composition of the group, with special emphasis
on the preponderance of female workers, the fact that they are mostly single, and their age
distribution is studied. It also examines their social background, their origin and their level
of literacy. Next, the issue of financial remuneration is addressed. In the summary section,
the main similarities and differences between the socio-demographic profile of
dressmakers, shop assistants and domestic workers are presented, as the latter professions
are also the subject of two other TFG( s) that are part of the same research project.
