[eng] The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (Dir2008/56/CE) establishes the creation of a monitoring
program to ensure the Good Environmental Status (BEA) of marine ecosystems, allowing a follow up
of the evolution of their status. In the case of infralittoral rocky systems, this monitoring program
provides different tools to assess how its environmental status changes over time, however, nowadays
an available system to evaluate if the status of the environmental ecosystem is good, stable or bad at
a specific moment doesn’t exist yet.
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) have shown be an effective tool in order to improve the environmental
status, specially of infralittoral rocky systems. Considering this, the present study hypothesizes that
the values of certain ecological parameters in the MPAs of a specific area can constitute a good guide
line of what its ideal environmental state would be. The goal of this study is to evaluate if the state of
the characteristic fish populations of the rocky infralittoral of the Levantino Balearic demarcation
(LEBA) in the 2020-2022 biennium was good, stable or bad, taking as a reference of good
environmental status the marine reserves of this demarcation and without taking into account the time
component. In order to accomplish this, we have used data from fish censuses (44 dive sites, 13 within
marine reserves, 114 transects/replicates and more than 35,000 observations) and Principal
Component Analysis (PCA) to compare the effectiveness of 7 indicators and evaluate the role that
different fish species play in terms of biomass and size. In both analyses, the data has been grouped
according to the level of protection to confirm the importance of this factor. Finally, percentiles have
been used to determine whether the environmental status is good, stable or bad, taking the values of
the indicators in the MPAs from the BEA.
In both analyses, the first component (PC1) had a positive effect, surely attributable to the effect of
protection, while the second component (PC2) had a negative effect that responds to extractive
activities. In terms of the 4 best indicators, the average of the marine reserves corresponded to
percentiles that vary between 91.5 and 92.5, reason why the 90th percentile (PC90) was established as
the reference threshold for good environmental status. This corresponds to a biomass per transect that
oscillated between 11.6 and 17.8 Kg. The values that were below the 50th percentile were generally
very low (0-2Kg of biomass per transect), which is why this percentile has been established as a
threshold for poor environmental status. Lastly, the values >PC50 and <PC90 have been assigned the
environmental status 'Regular'. Based on this system, the status of the rocky infralittoral fish
populations in the study area corresponds to the category of 'Fair'. The high degree of dynamism and
variability of infralittoral rock systems implies that the percentiles assigned to each environmental
state category must be specifically adapted to each particular study case. The system suggested here
constitutes a first step to determine the environmental status of a marine ecosystem at a given moment,
regardless of its trend over time, as well as a potentially useful tool for the management of marine
ecosystems.
